Michael Hunte passed away Sunday, September 15th, 2024, at Lakeridge Hospital, Oshawa at the age of 86 after suffering a severe stroke. He was born April 30, 1938 in Long Bay St. Phillip, Barbados.
Michael leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years, Undine (nee Harte), and sons Pedro (Celine Hunte), Nigel (Michelle Dwyer-Hunte) and Patrick (Beverly Lewis-Hunte). Loving grandfather of grandchildren: Natalie (Tavis Wong), Ashley, Ethan, Joshua, Jason, and Kevin.
Michael will be missed by his brothers and sisters: Daisy, Jeptha, Enid, Jeffrey, Grantley, and Hughleigh. He was predeceased by his father (Merton), mother (Irene) and brothers and sisters: Daisy, Eustace, Hilda, Vera, Undine, and Carl. He will also be mourned by many in-laws, nephews and nieces in Canada, Barbados, U.K. and the U.S.A.
Growing up in Barbados, Michael was an avid swimmer, deep sea fisherman, and loved to work on cars and trucks. He was very popular among his peers and loved being around people. Michael was a strong-minded individual and would always succeed at whatever he put his mind to. He was particularly close with his twin brother Jeffrey and older sisters Daisy and Enid, who helped raise him when he was young.
He moved to England in 1960 where he worked several jobs in different fields. In 1961 he met the love of his life Undine Harte; they got married March 30, 1963. They had their first son Pedro and two years later welcomed their second son Nigel. In 1966 Michael made the difficult decision to leave his family and immigrate to Canada in search of a better life for himself and his growing family. Though raising two boys alone was tough on Undine, Michael worked hard to secure a better life in Canada and brought them all in 1968.
In Canada, they welcomed their third and youngest son, Patrick, and Michael continued to work several jobs to make ends meet for his growing family. This included (believe it or not) being a part-time singer on Parliament Street in downtown Toronto! In 1971 he began his job with Canada Wire and Cable, where he worked as a machine operator until his retirement in 2003.
Michael transitioned into grandparenthood where he enjoyed taking care of his two beautiful granddaughters Natalie and Ashley, spending his days driving and picking them up each day from school. He loved spending time with them, treating them to fast food every day even though their parents hated it, but as you all know, “you can’t tell Michael anything!†They called him “Bupah;†his eyes lit up each time he heard those words and he would move heaven and earth for them.
From there, he started to welcome more grandchildren: first there was Ethan, then Jason, then Joshua, and lastly Kevin.
Michael enjoyed watching the Toronto Blue Jays hoping they’d win another championship...someday.
Michael was very proud of his boys as they all became successful in their fields and raised beautiful families. He was also proud of each of their accomplishments in sports (Pedro and Nigel in track and field and Patrick in basketball).
Michael will be remembered as a caring, hardworking, and dedicated family man who loved his friends and family, he had a big heart (albeit rough exterior) and will greatly be missed by all.
Friends will be received at the Accettone Funeral Home (384 Finley Ave., Ajax) On Saturday October 5th, 2024 from 11 am until the time of service in the Chapel at 1 pm
Interment will follow the service at Duffin Meadows Cemetery 2505 Brock Road North, Ajax
